Abt Associates is currently seeking a Staff Accountant for our Cambridge, MA office.


Key Roles and Responsibilities


  • Assists in the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements and analyses for distribution to senior management and the board of directors
  • Helps to ensure financial statements comply with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Helps to ensure financial statements are professionally presented according to best practices in the industry
  • Identifies, designs and implements process improvements in accordance with best practices within the industry
  • Applies technology to accounting, financial reporting and internal control processes to ensure the most efficient and effective processes. - Works with senior accountants and/or the assistant controller to evaluate company compliance with debt covenants
  • Assists with the preparation of compliance reports for issuance to financial institutions
  • Prepares account reconciliations and analyses.
  • Identifies researches and resolves reconciling items as needed.
  • Participates in the evaluation of internal controls for compliance with Sarbanes Oxley (as implemented by the company)
  • Makes recommendations for new controls or improvements to existing controls  as appropriate
  • Works with the assistant controller and senior accountants to perform control related audits as necessary.
  • Acts as liaison with external auditors
  • Prepares audit schedules and responds to audit inquiries - Monitors the timely completion of assigned month and year end closing tasks
  • Works with the GL Accounting Manager and external tax advisors to ensure tax compliance and the successful completion of income tax and sales tax audits.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Perform moderately complex accounting activities related to the maintenance of a complete and accurate GL and the resultant managerial reports and financial statements.  



Preferred Skills / Prerequisites


  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word, with some PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of and experience with enterprise level general ledger systems (Oracle preferred).
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Strong work ethic and a team player.
  • Must be a critical thinker and problem solver able to question what is and recommend what should be. 


Minimum Qualifications


  • BA/BS with 2 - 4 years of experience as an accountant (with a professional service firm preferred) or the equivalent of education and experience.
